Riyadh, situated at the centre of the Arabian Peninsula, is the capital city of Saudi Arabia and the most populated one, with 5.188 million inhabitants. Starting with the 1940s, the city began to change from a narrow, isolated town into a thriving metropolis, through the construction of new settlements and neighborhoods. Between 1974 and 1992 the population growth in the city averaged 8.2% per year. Nowadays, Riyadh is the administrative and commercial hub of Saudi Arabia, and home to the headquarters of most of the largest companies from the country. It has a modern highway system, with the Northern Ring Road connecting the eastern and western parts of the city, and the King Fahd Road connecting the northern and the southern parts.
