Marcus Aurelius by Frank McLynn

marcus aurelius‘Meditations’ by Marcus Aurelius is perhaps the single most influential book on my thinking and so I was delighted when the academic Frank McLynn published his biography of the Roman philosopher-emperor called ‘Marcus Aurelius – A Life’ (affiliate link).  In this book McLynn gives us as an insight into Aurelius’ stoic philosophy, achievements as emperor, the historical context in which he lived and his character.  It is a beautifully researched piece of work and gave me a much richer understanding of the man who thought and wrote about what it means to live ‘the good life’ and how to combine power with philosophy.
