Watching last nights Kennedy Center Honors Awards it was noticeable how few singers can really embody and interpret a song. Too many of them seem to just belt out the tune without really expressing the sentiment or nuances of the lyrics. Driving to work this morning Beth Nielsen Chapman came on the radio and both her songwriting and interpretation just floored me. Here is a woman who both writes beautifully crafted songs and sings them in a way that really get over both the spirit and the meaning of the lyrics. Sand and Water, a song written following the death of her husband from cancer, is probably one of the best songs ever written about impermanence and loss. Enjoy.
