Creative Third Places
And I was giving a talk recently, I was talking about the importance of what we call these creative third places, maybe what are some of my other videos, you've heard me talk about this concept of a third place somewhere that isn't your desk, where you work from, but also isn't your home. It's a kind of middle place where we can do our most creative, most innovative work. It's where we come together to collaborate with other people. Now, here in Paris in the 1920s, there was a woman called Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein was pretty incredible because she can create what we think of today as this idea of salons.
These are 1920s versions of this third place. And she created these with her partner, Alice B Toklas. And what they would do is create a space in their home in Paris, where they would bring together the greatest thinkers and innovators of the day. And it gives an opportunity, and freedom to introduce great thinkers, so they could bounce ideas off and challenge each other's ideas. So you as a way to introduce maybe Ernest Hemingway to F Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso to Salvador Dali. But what was so special about Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas is they were what we call creative pairs. They were very different personalities. Gertrude was a master networker bringing really interesting minds together. But Alice B Toklas was slightly quieter, but she was very good, just quietly working if you're having quiet conversations and making introductions, so if you don't already have one, maybe it's a good idea. No, you create your own sound on your own third places where you can maybe host dinners host events, to bring people together with different ways of thinking, as a great way just to spark creativity.
