As a keynote speaker, Artificial Intelligence Marketing is a trend that I’m being asked to speak about more and more at global conferences. Why? Well the rise of technologies such as AI and machine learning lead management consultants McKinsey & Co to predict that 45 percent of jobs will be automated in the next 20 years. Marketing is one area which is already being disrupted by Artificial Intelligence. While the idea of a robot taking your job can seem scary I believe that it represents a golden opportunity to automate the routine marketing tasks and give us back the time to focus on more creative work.

You probably already use some kind of marketing automation. It could be something as simple as sending an automated email response when someone enquires about your product or service. However AI will take marketing automation to another level and in the process save us time and enable a richer, more relevant customer experience.

Let’s take email marketing as an example. Most of the time the process of segmenting your email lists and sending out messages based on broad categories such as interests or ZIP codes is a manual and pretty boring task. Artificial Intelligence can help you find smaller groups or segments so you can target your message and offering to those prospects more effectively. AI helps email marketers find the holy grail of sending the right message, at the right time, to the right person.

At the moment a marketer might send out one email at 11am on a Monday and another at 3pm on a Thursday to see which gets a better open and click through rate. They would then analyze that data so they could send future messages at the day and time most likely to get a response. Artificial Intelligence can do all of that, and much much more.

Email marketing AI could segment up your audiences by psychographic, aspiration, buyer behaviour, needs or any other variable and tailor the subject line, email copy, graphics, and call to action to give each email the highest chance of being opened and clicked. Every time the AI sends an email it learns a little more about your audience and what their hot buttons are.

The artificial intelligence could also pull data from their social media and browsing history in addition to email to better understand how your customers make decisions and what kind of email messaging will work best. Much of this technology already exists but it slowly being made available to marketers so they can, hopefully, use it for good.

What this also means for marketers is it will allow you to focus more on strategy and creativity in your work. It’s no wonder then that the World Economic Forum have said that by 2020  ‘creativity’ will be the third most important job skill required in the workplace. IBM Watson’s artificial intelligence product is already enabling small marketing teams to create detailed marketing campaigns in a less than a day instead of the usual weeks or months.

So what can you do to take advantage of this Age of Artificial Intelligence. Well I advise two things. Firstly start investing in your creativity skills, whether that’s by taking one of my courses at C.SCHOOL or any of the other high-quality creativity training providers. Secondly enrol on one of the many free online courses on artificial intelligence so you can learn some of the basics of AI and machine learning and how it might apply to your work. Thanks for watching.
